Breast Cancer Reconstruction

Breast tissue is composed of a special type of glandular tissue for breast milk production and delivery. In addition to infections and benign processes, the breasts are subject to cancer, such as ductal and lobular carcinomas, sarcomas, and phyllodes tumors. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. Lumpectomy or mastectomy, with and without chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, may be a part of your treatment plan for breast cancer. These therapies can therefore change the shape and structure of your breast. Dr. Snider treats all types of breast deformities and uses a multidisciplinary strategy, working closely with your oncologist, radiotherapist and breast surgeon, to ensure the best comprehensive care. She will provide you with several reconstructive options, including the use of your own tissue for an al-natural result. By developing a relationship with you, Dr. Snider is able create an individualized plan that reflects your emotional, mental, interpersonal, and physical needs.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the body, and is more common in fair-skinned and elderly individuals. It typically appears in areas of accumulated sun exposure, such as the ears, eyelids, lips, nose, hands and arms. Prolonged sun throughout a person’s lifetime increases their risk for skin changes and cancer formation. Therefore, the use of high SPF sunscreen (preferably containing zinc or titanium) and physical barriers such as hats and long sleeves can help prevent skin cancer formation. There are 3 basic types of skin cancer: basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. They often appear as simple spots or sores that persist for months and do not improve with time. All skin cancer types need to be removed and treated diligently to prevent spread. Dr. Snider will evaluate your areas of concern and use advanced techniques to not only remove your skin cancer, but also reconstruct the area so that you can get back to your life doing what you love to do most.

Melanoma

Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer that originates from the pigmented cells in our skin called melanocytes. It is least common form of skin cancer, accounting for only 5%, but it is aggressive and needs to be treated promptly and diligently. Sun protection measures are essential in preventing the most common types of melanoma. But melanomas can be found anywhere on the body, even if it is not in an area of excessive sun exposure. While analyzing a mole for a suspected melanoma, the mnemonic ABCDE can be used. This stand for abnormal growth, irregular border, changes in color, diameter greater than 6 mm, and evolving lesion. In suspected cases of melanoma, prompt evaluation and treatment is paramount. Dr. Snider uses a multidisciplinary approach and advanced reconstructive surgery techniques to provide the most comprehensive care for you and your loved ones. Life and quality of life are of utmost importance.

Neurofibromatosis

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that is typically diagnosed in childhood and causes tumors along nerves in the brain, spine, and skin. Neurofibromatosis type 1 manifests early in life and results in multiple light brown (café-au-lait) spots and benign tumors (neurofibromas) under the skin. Neurofibromas grow throughout adulthood, with new ones continuously emerging, and can become disfiguring and painful. Unlike other benign lesions of the skin, neurofibromas have a more extensive deep component and exert a hormonal effect on the surrounding tissues, which can cause bleeding. Therefore, scarring, bleeding and complications can be more serious for neurofibromatosis patients and require an experienced plastic surgeon to perform excision. Removal of neurofibromas can greatly reduce your symptoms and help increase your overall quality of life. Dr. Snider is trained in removal of large plexiform neurofibromas as well as extensive small and medium sized cutaneous and subcutaneous neurofibromas throughout the face and body. Dr. Snider removes hundreds of tumors in one setting, limiting your downtime and the number of surgeries required for improved results.

Moles & Skin Tags

Moles, or nevi, are very common and come in all shapes and sizes. Sun exposure can perpetuate mole and sun spot formation. Your moles should be monitored for changes that may be related to skin cancer. These changes include rapid growth, color and border irregularities, bleeding, scabbing, or itching. Dr. Snider is trained for removal of any of your suspicious moles, spots, skin tags, or birthmarks. She uses a minimally invasive technique to ensure the most inconspicuous scar achievable. If you have undergone Mohs surgery, Dr. Snider will work closely with your dermatologist to plan the best reconstruction.

Age Spots

Dr. Snider uses a multi-modal approach to customize all skin treatments to your specific needs for the best outcome. Whether a chemical peel, laser treatment, or complete excision, you will be proud of your smoother and more youthful appearing skin.

Cysts

Because the skin has several components, there are many types of benign growths that can arise from the skin. Sebaceous cysts, inclusion cysts, and lipomas are among the most common. Typically they grow very slowly and an increase in size is not noticed until they become large enough to catch your attention. If these growths are not removed meticulously and entirely, they can recur. Dr. Snider uses special techniques to remove the entire growth so that the risk of it coming back is minimal and the remaining scar is hidden in a natural crease line.

Scar Revision & Keloids

Scars are the result of injury to the body such as a laceration, abrasion, burn, or surgical incision. The body heals the area by laying down rows of collagen fibers to create a scar. The initial scar looks very different from the final scar because the body takes time to organize and mature the collagen that it lays down. It takes on average 6-12 months to see the final result of a scar. Dr. Snider is extremely meticulous and detailed, and uses the most advance techniques to protect and preserve the tissue in a way that allows less scar formation. Thick, wide, and dark scars require special attention and may require specific techniques. A keloid is a type of thick, rope-like scar that results from the body creating too much collagen during the healing process. The collagen becomes disorganized and the scar grows and appears worse (not better) with time. Dr. Snider uses a multi-modal approach to prevent and correct the toughest of scars.
